Claire Gieringer (she/they) is a New York City based performance artist and solitary hedge witch. As a young child growing up in Denver, they learned how to locate their body in relation to the beautiful, expansive Colorado Rocky Mountains, a landscape that offered their small, wild bones a sense of silent salvation and peace. At eighteen, they transplanted their Southwestern roots to New York City to attend Tisch School of the Arts at New York University as a dance major and anthropology minor. During their time at Tisch, they were fortunate enough to perform work by Crystal Pite, Stefanie Batten Bland, Loni Landon, and Ori Flomin. Upon graduating in May 2017, they were one of fifteen international dancers selected by Marie Chouinard to participate in the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy where they performed work by William Forsythe and Benoit Lachambre. As a freelance artist they have performed with CompanySBB (under the direction of Stefanie Batten Bland), Alexis Zaccarello, The Feath3r Theory (under the direction of Raja Feather Kelly), and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company (apprentice). They have also been selected as a resident artist at The Sable Project in Stockbridge, Vermont (July 2019) and Lake Studios Berlin in Germany (February 2020).
As a born psychic empath, Claire experiences art making as a natural extension of their spiritual practice, utilizing dance/movement, voice, poetry, meditation, energy work and tarot reading as channels for personal and collective reflection, storytelling, and healing. Their work explores ownership/agency of the femme moving body, shapeshifting,
boundaries, goddexx mythology, pleasure, spiritual channeling, dissolution of karmic contracts, lunar, solar, and earth based rituals, and the healing of generational wounds, abuse and trauma.
In their spare time, you can find Claire making semi-holy pilgrimages up mountains, saying thank you to mirrors, and sending prayers to the moon.
