Claire Gieringer is a New York City based performance artist and solitary hedge witch. As a young girl growing up in Denver, she learned how to locate her body in relation to the beautiful, expansive Colorado Rocky Mountains, a landscape that offered her small, wild bones a sense of silent salvation and peace. At eighteen, she transplanted her Southwestern roots to New York City to attend Tisch School of the Arts at New York University as a dance major and anthropology minor. During her time at Tisch, she was fortunate enough to perform work by Crystal Pite, Stefanie Batten Bland, Loni Landon, and Ori Flomin. Upon graduating May 2017 , she was one of fifteen international dancers selected by Marie Chouinard to participate in the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy where she performed work by William Forsythe and Benoit Lachambre. As a freelance artist she has performed with CompanySBB (under the direction of Stefanie Batten Bland), Alexis Zaccarello, and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company (apprentice). In July 2019, she was selected as a resident artist at The Sable Project in Stockbridge, Vermont.
As a born psychic empath, Claire experiences art making as a natural extension of her spiritual practice, utilizing dance/movement, voice, poetry, meditation, energy work and tarot reading as channels for personal and collective reflection, storytelling, and healing. Her work explores ownership/agency of the femme moving body, boundaries, dissolution of karmic contracts, lunar, solar, and earth based rituals, and the healing of generational wounds, abuse and trauma.
In her spare time, you can find Claire making semi-holy pilgrimages up mountains, saying thank you to mirrors, and sending prayers to the moon.
